Philippians 2:5

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, (NKJV)

​At its heart, Philippians 2:5 is an exhortation to adopt the mindset or attitude of Jesus Christ. The Greek word for "mind" (phroneo) refers not just to intellectual thought, but to a person's entire disposition, way of thinking, and fundamental approach to life. It's an active, practical mindset that influences one's behavior and relationships.

​In the immediate context of the letter, Paul is addressing disunity and selfish ambition among the Philippian Christians. To counter this, he points them to the ultimate example of humility and self-sacrifice: Jesus Christ. The verse serves as a bridge, connecting the call for unity and humility in verses 1-4 with the detailed description of Christ's self-emptying in the following verses (6-11).

• ​Obedience and Humiliation: Jesus's humility was demonstrated through his obedience, even to the point of a shameful and excruciating death on the cross. This act represents the ultimate act of self-denial and selfless love.

​Applying the "mind of Christ" means more than just intellectual assent; it requires a transformed way of living. It calls for believers to:

• ​Embrace Humility: To value others as more significant than themselves and to act without selfish ambition or pride. This means putting aside personal interests for the good of the community and others.

• ​Serve Others: To follow Christ's example of servant leadership. Just as Jesus humbled himself to serve humanity, believers are called to serve one another, even in tasks that may seem lowly or undignified.

• ​Prioritize Unity: The overarching context of the passage is a plea for unity. Adopting the mind of Christ fosters a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect, which is essential for a healthy and unified community of believers.
